Pamphlet

Wednesday, June 16, 1999

This month it’s been a year since I got my calling for the YW righting committee. This evening, during our usual monthly meeting, we were told that our hard work had finally paid off. Then we were each handed a pamphlet. This pamphlet was to be made available to all the Young Women leaders worldwide. It would help them have resources when they prepare their lessons.

On the back of the pamphlet, it said it was made by the Young Women’s General Presidency. There was also a big picture of the 3 women. It had each of their names under the picture.

I was stunned because the ladies I was working with on the committee were the ones who had done all the work! The Y.W. General Precedency attended our very first meeting, but we never saw them again! The Precedency had signed off on our work before it had gone into the pamphlet, but that was all the work they had done. I noticed the other ladies on the committee; they too, were looking to see if their names were on the pamphlet. We all looked at each other as if we knew what we were thinking, but no one said anything.

When I got home, I was troubled to find out that we were nowhere mentioned in the pamphlet. For the first time, it made sense to me why we were to keep our calling a secret. We had done hours of work! We had all sacrificed so much of our time, and they got all the credit!

I kept the pamphlet for a few years. Every time I would look at it, it made me mad. I thought maybe it was because I was prideful. I realized it was because they weren’t honest about who had made it, so I threw it away.

Monday, July 5, 1999

In my calling, we have been asked to work on a new pamphlet. It is still as overwhelming as it was before! It’s just as many hours of research, and I am still trying to recover from surgery. Since I have been in bed so much, my leg has gotten stiff. The doctor wants me to start going to physical therapy. If I don’t, my leg will never be able to bend again.

Thursday, July 8, 1999

I went to my first therapy appointment. It is all the way downtown. I don’t want to take time to drive that far, so I canceled next week’s appointment. Now I am trying to walk up and down the stairs a little more each day. It’s painful, but I have to do it so that I won’t have a stiff leg the rest of my life.

Wednesday, August 11, 1999

The weather has been crazy today! I have never seen wind this bad before! I had put the little boy I was watching down for a nap. Johny and the other boy I was watching were playing. I tried to work on my calling. It was hard to concentrate because the wind was making so much noise. It was time for my kids to come home from school, so I thought I’d better go check on them. Just then, Richard came home. I asked him why he was home so early. He said he had heard on the news that the wind would be getting worse, so he thought he’d better get home.

The wind was getting louder. The kids ran outside to look. I asked them to come in and shut the door. It was as if they were mesmerised by what they were seeing. I quickly ran to the door to tell them they needed to come back inside, now! When I got to the door, I was mesmerised by it too. Richard came outside aswell. As we all stood watching what looked like a tornado coming our way, I yelled, “Hurry, run inside!” The kids quickly obeyed. Richard was still just standing there. I was almost inside when I saw the neighbor’s shed come flying towards him. He was facing the other way, so he did not see it coming. I yelled to him, “Run!” Because of the look of horror on my face, he heeded my warning and ran.

The shead knocked a hole in the side of our house, then it landed where Richard had just been standing.

If he had not done as I asked, I am sure it would have killed him. Part of me was glad that his life was spared, and part of me thought, if only I could have kept my mouth shut. But then again, I would never have been able to live with myself.

On the evening news: A rare and strong F2 tornado had struck Utah. The tornado remained on the ground for about 14 minutes spaind about 4.25 miles. It destroyed approximately 800-1,000 trees. Over 154 homes were severely damaged. About 120 roofs were blown off. Over 100 people were reported injured, and a dozen were critically injured. In total, 300 buildings were damaged or destroyed.

Wednesday, June 16, 1999 This month it’s been a year since I got my calling for the YW righting committee.
