Before getting them, I never knew they could have so much personality. I had named everyone. Even though they looked alike, I knew which one was which.

While I was in the kitchen, I could hear the chickens making an awful lot of noise. I went into the backyard to see what was going on. Two dogs had gotten into the chicken cop and were in the process of killing the chickens.

When the dogs saw me, they ran away. They had managed to kill 4 of the chickens. The two that remained were Sissy and Sally. Sally had a deep bite wound, and I didn’t know if she was going to make it. Sissy was unharmed. I called up Laila, crying to tell her what had happened.

As soon as Laila finished work, she came out to tend to the injured chicken. She washed out the wound and put medicine on it. Both chickens were clearly traumatized by the event. I was surprised to see that Sissy stayed close to Sally and didn’t want to leave her side.

Even though Laila lived almost 45 minutes away, she came out daily until Sally was fully recovered.

Tuesday, April 4, 2017

We are leaving for our trip tomorrow morning. I needed to secure the fence around the last two chickens so the neighborhood dogs wouldn’t come back and kill them, too.

Richard told me he would come home from work early to help me with it. I had made a list of things that needed to get done before we left tomorrow.

My sister called to see how I was doing. I told her I wasn’t sure I would have time to get the chickens’ fence secured before we left tomorrow. I told her that Richard had said he would come home early to help, but I wasn’t sure if I could count on him. Beth told me she would come out later today and help me. She would bring her girls and then spend the night.

A little while later, I was so happy to see that Richard had kept his promise and came home from work early.

I had bought some bricks to set in the ground around the fence to keep the dogs out. The bricks were heavy, and the ground was hard.

As I was working, I wondered why Richard hadn’t come out to help me.

After working for a while, I went to check on him.

He was just hanging out with the Elders who were living with us. When Richard saw me, he said he would be out in a minute to help.

As it started to get dark, I could hear Beth drive up. I thought that at least now I could get some help. I continued working, thinking she would be out any minute. But no one ever came.

When Beth had come inside to drop off her things, she asked Richard why he wasn’t outside helping me. He told her that he had been worried about me and that I wanted to work alone. He told her that it helped me with my mental health. Beth asked him what was wrong with my mental health. He told her that I have been getting confused and have been forgetting where I put things.

Lately, I’ve also been putting things on the stove and forgetting about them. Thank goodness the smoke detector goes off, or else he was sure that I would have burnt the house down by now. The missionaries said, “That would explain why it had been going off so much!”

When I was finally done, I was so angry. It would have taken Richard and the missionary a fraction of the time it took me, since they are much stronger than I am.

I asked Beth why she had not come outside. She told me that Richard said you prefer to be alone, so I didn’t want to disturb you. I looked at Richard and asked him why he had said that. He said you love being in the backyard and acted like he had no idea what I was talking about. I was so frustrated, but I didn’t want to cause a scene in front of everyone, so I didn’t say anything.

I wanted to call off the trip, but Richard had already bought the plane tickets, and I was looking forward to seeing Ed and K again.

Since Beth was here, I didn’t want to ruin the rest of the evening, so I had her come help me pack. She asked me if I was doing okay. I told her I was just tired and didn’t understand why Richard couldn’t have come outside to help or have the missionary help since they weren’t doing anything anyway. Beth felt bad for not coming out to help me. I told her it was okay because it was not her fault that Richard had led her to believe I would rather work alone.

At the time, I was unaware of the conversation that had taken place just before I came in, or else I would have clarified that it wasn’t my fault the smoke detector had gone off as much as they had.

After I had been to the fire department, Richard had me believe that the smoke detectors had gone off because all the batteries had died. I’m guessing it’s because he didn’t want me to discover that he was behind it, so that he could keep messing with my head.

Richard told me to pack only what I could fit in my carry-on and assured me that, even though his carry-on was bigger than mine, I couldn’t put anything in his. I assured him I wouldn’t need to put anything in his.

When I got done packing, I still wanted to visit with Beth, so it was late before I got to bed.

Wednesday, April 5, 2017

We flew to Kansas in the morning.
