It seems too good to be true that he has not called or stopped by.

I got a phone call from a man named *Henry, who said he was from the Bureau of Investigation. I didn’t know that that meant. So I thought he was going to ask me to bail Sander out of jail. But that was not the case. He told me they had Sander in custody and asked if I minded answering some questions. I still didn’t understand who he was, and I was worried Sander would come after me if I answered any questions about him.

He could tell I was scared, so he assured me that Sander was not getting out of jail or would be able to come after me. He was investigating Sander’s background and wanted to know about his history and about our upbringing. He was doing a report to find out what had made him so violent. I asked him if Sander had done anything serious. He said he was not allowed to share that information with me. But his DNA was linked to something serious. We talked for a long time.

Henry told me that Sander was in prison and that they were going to send him to a prison in Arizona. Beth said she had a check for half my money and would give it to me when we got to her house.

When we got to Beth’s house, she gave me the check. It was crazy to see a check for over half a million dollars! Richard told me to sign the back so that he could deposit it for me. We spent the night at Beth’s place.

Thursday, January 1, 2009

The morning started nicely. Then Beth told me I was to give $10,000.00 to each of Bent’s two close friends. I was shocked!

One of the two friends owned his own successful business, and his wife was a nurse. Their kids were all grown up and had no kids living at home. The other guy was Kjeld. Kjeld’s kids were all grown and married. He seemed to be doing fine, too.

I asked her why she thought I should give them money. Beth told me that they were Bent’s friends and he had promised them both millions before he passed away. They were disappointed that they were not mentioned in the will. I told Beth I didn’t feel like I owed either of them any money.

Beth insisted I give both of them at least a few thousand. When she realized I wasn’t going to, she got furious with me! I had never seen her so upset before! He convinced me we had come so far together. Putting the money in our joint account would prove that we were one in our marriage.

I didn’t feel right about it. But I wanted to believe him, and it sounded logical.

Richard promised me he wouldn’t take out any of the money unless I knew what it was for. He was going to remodel the whole house and fix up the kitchen just like I had always wanted. It was so exciting!

I went to the bank and deposited the check. Richard came with me so that we could pay off what we owed on the house.

When I saw how much money we owed, I got confused. I thought for sure we had paid off way more than what it said. Richard quickly grabbed the papers and assured me it was the interest that had cost so much. Then he said, “There is still enough money that we will never have to worry about money the rest of our lives! Just think: even if the money is gone by the time I retire, I still have our 401 (k). You will never be poor again! We will have so much money! We will travel the world, and you can go back to Denmark whenever you want!

I had been poor my whole life. What he had just said was so comforting!

He was excited to go to Home Depot so I could pick out material so that he could get started fixing up the house.

Deep inside me, it bothered me that I had to pay so much money to the Bank for what we owed on the house. Richard had a way of making me think this was just how it was when it came to added-on interest.

When we got home, Richard locked all the bank papers in his filing cabinet. I told him that if he ever died, I would need to know where he kept the key. Richard told me that he would make sure to leave me a note so I would know where the key was in case he died before me. Something was not right, but I thought maybe it was just me being paranoid.

Sunday, January 4, 2009

I was about to write out a check to the church for 10 percent of my inheritance. Richard convinced me not to do that. He said that on Monday morning, on his way to work, he would take out 10 percent from the bank and drive it to the church office building. This way, no one in the ward would have to know that I had just inherited a large sum of money. It sounded logical, so I agreed.

Monday, January 5, 2009

When Richard got home from work, he showed me a bank statement that he had taken 10 percent out to give to the church.
