Chapter 95 Disco Ball

Ed, Mom’s 4th husband, came for a visit. Ed asked me why there was no lock on the front door. I told him it was because Richard had taken it off because he claimed it was broken. He said, we can’t get another lock on it till we get a new door. Ed wanted to know why we would need a new door to put a lock on it. I told him I didn’t know, and that’s just what Richard had told me. Ed shook his head because he had never heard anything like it.

Ed asked me for my phone book. When he got the phone book, he looked up locksmiths. Then he called a few numbers to find the cheapest lock. I went with Ed to pick up the lock. It had a key and a door handle. Ed only paid $ 12.00 for all of it since it was used. It still looked as good as new!

When we got home, it took Ed less than 15 minutes to install it. Here we had lived without a lock on the front door for almost half a year, and this was all it took to fix it! I couldn’t thank Ed enough!

When Richard got home, I thought he would be happy to see that the front door was finally fixed. Instead, he got angry. I asked him why he wasn’t happy about it. His answer didn’t make any sense! It was as if he had enjoyed tormenting me with it and now he was no longer in control of the situation. I reasoned it was because he had something mentally wrong going on, and it was just one more odd thing that he had done for no reason. Surely Richard wouldn’t have taken off a perfectly good lock just to be a jerk .

A huge package arrived in the mail. I wondered what it could be, so I opened it. It was a fancy disco ball, ready to be plugged in and lit. I looked at the invoice. It was almost $ 200.00. When Richard came home from work, I asked him what the disco ball was for. He said it was for the scouts. I asked him what in the world the scouts would need a disco ball for. He said that he was going to teach them how to slow dance. He had planned for the boys to dance with each other. He was going to turn out the lights and have music playing to help them feel more comfortable. I asked why they would need to do that.

Richard said that when he was young, he was afraid of girls, so he thought it would be a good way for the boys to learn how to dance and bust their confidence.

It was the oddest thing I had ever heard! I thought for sure there was definitely something mentally wrong with him!

I asked Richard if the scout committee had approved to pay for the disco ball. He admitted that they hadn’t. But he thought it was important that the boys get comfortable with slow dancing. Therefore, he had paid for it himself.

I was so angry over the disco ball. We had lived without a lock on the front door for so long because we couldn’t afford to get it fixed. Here was this stupid disco ball for almost $ 200.00!

It was garbage day. I thought it was perfect timing. I took the disco ball and threw it in the trash. I stood and watched as the garbage truck picked up our trash because I wanted to make sure I would never see that disco ball ever again!

When Richard got home from work, he asked where his disco ball was. I told him it was in a landfill somewhere. He got upset. I was prepared for it! We got into a heated argument! I was not about to back off. I told Richard I wanted to see our finances so that I would know what was going on. He wasn’t about to let that happen, so he backed off.
