My sister had an old used car that she no longer needed, so she gave it to Jared. It’s sitting in the driveway, waiting for Jared to get his driver’s license. Jared will be getting his license next week. He is so excited about it!
Jared asked me if he could go hang out with Benny. I told him as long as they stayed out of trouble.
Even though Jared was not supposed to drive his car, he and Benny took it for a joy ride. On the way back home, Jared thought it would be cool to press the gas and brake at the same time to get the tires spinning. Jared lost control and hit a tree.
Jared came running into the house. He was out of breath. I knew by the way Jared looked that something bad had happened.
Jared wanted his dad to hurry and haul his car back to our house before the police saw it. When Richard and Jared got to the car, a tow truck was already taking Jared’s car away. Jared felt bad because he had no money to get the car back, and Richard wouldn’t help. Jared also felt bad because Benny had quite the goose egg from when they had hit the tree.
When I found out how much it would cost to recover the car, I felt bad because I didn’t have the money needed. I felt really sorry for Jared because I knew how much he loved that car, and who knows when he will be able to get another one. Richard asked me how we should punish Jared for what he had done. I told him I didn’t think we should do anything. I figured it had already been hard enough on him that his friend had gotten hurt and he had lost his car. I thought that was punishment enough.

I went to the store this morning. When I got back, Richard had just finished shaving Jared’s hair off. I had never seen Jared’s hair so short! It was pretty much all gone! I could hardly believe my eyes! Jared had such nice hair! I asked Richard why in the world he had buzzed Jared’s hair off. Richard said it was because Jared was going to court after he crashed his car.
I said, “You don’t know that, and even if Jared was going to go to court, it didn’t matter that he had curly hair!” Richard told me that from now on, Jared would think twice before he disobeyed.
I was upset that Richard believed he was justified in what he had done to Jared. Oh, how I wish I had been home when Richard decided to buzz Jared’s hair. I never would have let this happen!
Jared looked lost. I knew how much Jared loved his hair, so I put out my arms to hug him. Jared never lets me hug him anymore, but this time, Jared fell into my arms. Jared hugged me tight and started to cry. Then he said, “Why am I so stupid!” All I could do was hold Jared and reassure him that he was not stupid and that his hair would grow back.
