Chapter 158 Not Invited?

Saturday, May 21, 2016

Richard just barely bought a nice bike that’s been sitting in the garage. A few days ago, he bought another that cost a little over $3,000.00, plus all the gear that goes with it.

He had promised to help me with some things around the house, but he was excited about his new bike and wanted to go for a bike ride. He said that he would help me when he got back. Just then, the phone rang. It was his friend from our ward who wanted him to help with something that he needed done around his house. Richard dropped everything and went to help him.

He returned 3 hours later to go on his bike ride. Before he left, he said he would do what needed to be done when he got back.

I knew when he got back that he wouldn’t have time to do anything. I was so irritated with him.

2 and a half hours later, he called me on the home phone to say he was too tired to ride his bike back and asked me to come pick him up. He gave me specific instructions on how to get where he was. I told him I was on my way.

I never wrote down the instructions because I had no intention of going to get him.

About 30 minutes later, he called again. I didn’t answer the phone. I waited another 30 minutes, then I called him back. I told him I felt bad I didn’t have a cell phone to call him while I had been out looking for him. I didn’t understand the instructions he had given me. I told him to go ahead and start riding his bike home, and I would find him on the route. Richard then gave me instructions again and had me repeat them to make sure I got them right.

After another 30 minutes had passed, Richard called me again. I didn’t answer so that he would think I was on my way to get him. After another 30 minutes, I called him. I said, “I have been driving around, but I just can’t seem to find you.” I told him to continue on the route, and I would try one more time. He told me where he was and again gave me instructions on how to get there.

Richard had finally made his way back home.

I told him I felt really bad for not being able to find him. I said, “If I had a phone like his, then I would have GPS, and I would also be able to call him to let him know where abouts I was.

Richard could see the logic, so we went and got me a nice phone just like the one that he had.

When we got back home, Richard told me that he would help me next Saturday with the things that needed to get done.

I honestly thought Richard was going to help me today. But I should have known better.

When he got up this morning, he said the men in the ward had to go help a single lady with some things at her house. When he came back 5 hours later, he told me he was going for a bike ride with one of his friends from the ward. He promised he would help me some other time.

I was so frustrated and wanted to hire someone to do the things I couldn’t do myself. But I knew Richard would get upset with me. I will just have to wait till he is able to do it.

It’s been so nice to have Johny back from his mission!

He has helped me with so many things that needed to get done.

Both before his mission and now that he is home again.

I don’t know what I would do without him!

When Johny came home from work today, he asked me where his dad was and why he never did anything to help me. I told him he had gone to the gym. Johny asked, “He gets up at 5:00 am every morning to go to the gym, don’t you find it odd that he goes again after work?” I told him I did. When I questioned it, Richard said he needed to work out different parts of his body, which is why he goes to the gym so much. Johny said, I don’t believe that’s where he is. I am going to follow him to see where he goes. I said, “You can’t do that; we need to trust that he is telling us the truth.” Johny responded, “If you don’t want me to follow him, I’ll respect that, but I still don’t think that’s where he is spending so much of his time. Besides, it’s just not right that he never does anything around here. I agreed and said Richard has promised me that after he was done with his calling in the Bishopric, he would have more time to help me. Johny said, “I can’t always be here, so for your sake, let’s hope so.”

Then Johny said, “He treats you like crap, why do you stay married to him?” I told him that I believed when we got to the other side, things would be better.

The missionaries have helped me dig out a path for a walkway. They also helped me get rocks and put them in. Next, I am going to get pavers. I am excited to have it done!

Richard has, on and off, gone over to help Jared with the remodeling he is doing on his house. When he goes there, he is still trying to patch things up. But it doesn’t seem to be working.

The grandkids don’t come over for Danish lessons anymore. We still get together with Jared and his family once in a while. When we are together, it’s not been the same as it used to be. I am so sad about everything, and I keep trying to see what I can do differently, but it doesn’t seem to be working.

I saw on Facebook that someone had made a fun Halloween display, so I texted Jared if he and his family would like to go with us this evening to see it. I was so happy when I got a text back from Jared saying that they would go with us after dinner.

I had been looking forward to it. When Richard and I got to Jared’s house, it seemed like the tension between us was worse than it had been before.

When Richard and I got home, I cried because I couldn’t understand what was going on. Richard told me I just had to accept that Jared’s wife wasn’t nice and had turned Jared against me. He had tried to mend things, but nothing he had said worked. I had to get used to the fact that they didn’t like me.

Mary, our exchange student, had come to spend a couple of months with us. I let her use my car while she was here. The radio in my car only works occasionally. I had been wanting to take it in to get it fixed, but Richard told me not to because he knew how to fix it. Since he never got around to it, I made an appointment to have it looked at. Every time I made the appointment, the radio would work again, so I would cancel the appointment, and then it would stop working again.

The radio hasn’t worked for a while now. When I handed Mary the car keys, I apologized for the radio not working. When she turned on the car, it worked. It worked the whole time she was staying with us. It was so frustrating to me why that was happening, but I was glad it worked while she was using it.

Jared and his family love Mary, so we always do something together when she is here visiting. Jared had told her that he would take her flying. I was looking forward to it, because I thought for sure I would be coming along now that Mary was here.

When Richard got home from work, he told me that Jared had texted him, inviting him, Mary, and Johny to go flying with him and his family tomorrow. I asked, “So I am not invited to come?” Richard said, “You know how they feel about you, so it’s best you stay home.”

I can’t put into words how sad I was about it! I felt like I was reliving my childhood when only Sander was allowed to visit our dad, while I was told I had to stay home because my dad didn’t like me.

Jared had asked his dad to let Laila and her husband know so that they could come too, but he never did.

Johny, Mary, and Richard left early today to go spend the day with Jared and his family. The whole time I stayed home and cried.

After they had spent the day together, Jared and Emma invited them to their house to eat dinner. Johny didn’t think it was right that I wasn’t there, so he asked Jared if it was okay that he texted me to tell me to go to their house so that I could have dinner with them. Jared said that was fine with him.

Johny called to tell me to meet them at Jared’s and Emma’s house for dinner. I was so happy they wanted me to come to dinner with them, so I hurried and got ready to go.

When I got there, and we had eaten dinner, my youngest grandson, who is 4, asked me, “Farmor, why didn’t you come be with us earlier today?” I said, “Because I wasn’t invited.” Emma looked at me and asked, “Why would you say that to him?!” I responded, “Because that’s what happened.” Emma got frustrated and went to the other room, slamming the door shut. Since I didn’t feel welcome, I left.

When Mary, Johny, and Richard came home, I asked Richard why he had smiled when Emma got upset. He said, “Because I was happy you could finally see for yourself just how much she doesn’t like you. I told him there was still nothing to smile about. He said it was because he didn’t know what else to do since he didn’t want the grandkids to feel the tension.

It didn’t make sense to me, but I figured nothing about him made any sense, and he was just being his stupid self.

Richard posted on his Facebook page that he had spent the day with Jared and his family flying.

Seeing his post made me feel even worse about everything.

Every year for Christmas, we have a talent show for the family. Everyone takes turns showing what they have learned during the year. For my talent, I memorized the song from Dumbo, “Baby Mine” in Danish.

With the way things were going between Jared and his family, I figured this might be our last talent show together. I wanted to sing the song for my grandkids. It has so much more meaning in Danish, and I felt it described the love I have for them.

Emma was going back to Denmark this week, so we had our yearly family Christmas party.

I invited Jared, his family, Sarah, her boyfriend, Laila, and her husband. Since we were all together, we had our family picture taken. After dinner, we had the talent show. As I sang “Baby Mine,” it was hard not to choke up.

Jared, Emma, and I didn’t say much to each other. When we were done with the talent show, I went with the grandkids to the playroom to be with them. The way things were between Jared, Emma, and me, I wondered when I would get to see them again.

As I was playing with them, I did my best not to let it show that I was heartbroken. When it was time for them to leave, my youngest grandson said he wasn’t done playing and asked if I minded that we didn’t cleaned up, so we could continue where we had left off next time he came over.

Even though I knew in my heart they wouldn’t be coming over again, I told him we didn’t have to clean up, and we would continue right where we had left off.
